The Gift of Space

Inventure Experience, Men's Inventure | July 2025

A few months ago, I did something that, at the time, felt selfish, something entirely uncharacteristic of me. And yet, it turned out to be one of the most meaningful decisions I’ve ever made.

It began on an ordinary evening, in the all too familiar rhythm of scrolling through social media, what I had convinced myself was a way to decompress. That’s when I stumbled upon Julie Robinson and her venture, Inventure. A simple website. A few words that pierced through the noise: “Unplug. Create space.”

I didn’t know it then, but those words would become a turning point.

On impulse, I signed up. It felt wildly impractical. How could anyone truly disconnect in today’s hyperconnected world? Surely not me. But two months later, there I was in the vast stillness of the Great Karoo, with five strangers, no phone, no watch, no notifications. Just the land, the sky, and the quiet.

I won’t pretend it started easy. Handing over my phone triggered instant anxiety. But within ten minutes of hiking into the heart of the Karoo, something within me softened. I began to let go.

Julie has a quiet magic about her, an ability to hold space for others with deep kindness, intuition, and grace. She didn’t just lead us; she curated an experience that somehow met each of us exactly where we were in our lives.

What is Inventure? That’s hard to define. It’s not a retreat. It’s not therapy. It’s not an escape. It’s a return to self, to stillness, to simplicity.

Each of us arrived for different reasons. But we all needed the same thing: space. Space to think. To breathe. To simply be. To slow down. And in giving myself that gift, I realized how rare and necessary it truly is.

I left the Karoo with more than memories. I left with clarity, calm, and a deep respect for the power of unplugging. It’s not selfish. It’s essential. Because when you create space for yourself, you return stronger, softer, and more present for everyone who depends on you.

I’m sharing this not to promote a business, but to encourage a mindset. Make space. Be still. Reconnect, not to Wi-Fi, but to what really matters.

I’ll never miss another Inventure again.
